What is an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship?

An Australian School-Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) allows students in Years 11 and 12 to achieve all of the following at the same time:

  • Study for their HSC;
  • Earn a training wage;
  • Have a part-time job;
  • Receive a nationally recognised qualification; and
  • Receive accreditation for up to the 1st year of an apprenticeship.

How does it work?

  • Students attend work 1 day per week;
  • Attend school 4 days per week;
  • Your traineeship/apprenticeship becomes another subject in your school timetable in the same way as Maths or English etc

Why undertake an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship?

  • You get a head start towards your career and a competitive edge when looking for future employment;
  • You earn an income and move towards a nationally recognised qualification while still at school;
  • Provides you with important hands on skills and valuable industry experience;
  • Improves your confidence and communication skills, while building a strong work ethic;
  • You may become qualified even sooner with the opportunity to work extra hours after school, on weekends or school holidays;
  • May provide you with the opportunity to go on to further education after completing your qualification, or further progress your career, and
  • You can undertake the type of training that suits your learning needs, including training delivered on-the-job, off-the-job, or a combination of both.

What is Pre-vocational training?

Pre-vocational training provides training, support and assistance to people who wish to obtain an Australian Apprenticeship. The training is delivered by registered Group Training Organisations (see Contact Details for Group Training Organisations) and is accredited and recognised by employers nationally. It provides basic skills for a particular industry and general work practices such as communication, time management, organisational skills, teamwork and occupational health and safety.

How does it work?

Pre-vocational training provides participants with 150 hours of training (20 hours per week) in the trades area, which aims at articulating into an Australian Apprenticeship in the trades. The GTTP training provides a mix of technical skills, that is, specific units of competency from national training packages for which a statement of attainment can be achieved and generic skills to make participants ready to commence a new Apprenticeship.

Why undertake pre-vocational training?

The pre-vocational training helps participants gain better skills and improves their chances of obtaining an Apprenticeship, or finding work. It provides training, support and assistance to participants to prepare them for work, including counselling on career choices, training in general work skills and habits, and supported work experience.

The pre-vocational training is ideal for young people choosing a career path to gain experience in the trade fields, and also for people who have completed school seeking training, or perhaps even a career change.
