Work for the Dole

What is Work for the Dole?

Work for the Dole is a Commonwealth Government programme that gives you the chance to gain some work experience while doing something worthwhile for your community. It is also an approved activity for mutual obligation purposes, so you can meet your mutual obligation by doing a Work for the Dole placement at the same time as earning benefits like training credits.

If you're 18 or over and on Newstart, Youth Allowance or Parenting Payment you can volunteer for Work for the Dole. If it's your first year on a payment from Centrelink you can volunteer after you finish Intensive Support job search training with your Job Network Member. If you have been unemployed for some time you can volunteer for Work for the Dole when you are not doing another activity.

As a Job Network member Campbell Page can maintain a relationship with you during your period of unemployment.

What is Community Work?

Community Work is voluntary work undertaken by job seekers and income support recipients who are registered with and monitored by a Community Work Coordinator.

What do Community Work Coordinators do?

Community Work Coordinators work with other community and not-for-profit organisations to develop quality Work for the Dole activities that provide a benefit to both Work for the Dole participants and the community. Community Work Coordinators approve, manage and monitor Work for the Dole activities, place participants in activities and administer Training Credits.

Campbell Page is a Community Work Coordinator for Work for the Dole or Community Work. We will assist you by placing you in a suitable volunteer not-for profit organisation for your Work for the Dole activity. We will also administer Training Credits.

Training Credits

When you complete your Work for the Dole or Community Work placement you may receive training credits. Your training credits will pay for accredited education or training to help you become more job ready. The value of the training credit will depend on the total number of hours you complete in your Work for the Dole or Community Work activity. On completion of your placement, Campbell Page staff will tell you the value of your training credit. You will also receive a letter approximately four weeks after your placement confirming the amount you have earned. You can enrol in your training course straight away. If you can't start your training course before the end of the 12 months, you must let your Community Work Coordinator know.

Sponsors

Campbell Page as a sponsor organisation can develop Work for the Dole activity proposals. Campbell Page can manage a Work for the Dole activity by providing the following services:

  • a safe environment and on-site supervision for participants;
  • complete a risk assessment form;
  • necessary training;
  • record and report on partipant attendance;
  • give the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations access to the participants and the activity for monitoring purposes;
  • keep records of expenditure to justify payments; and
  • arrange another participant to start as soon as one leaves.
