Stories of Jobseekers

Peter’s story …

Peter had been out of work for over 10 years. He became a Campbell Page client 12 months ago.

Peter volunteered to sign up with Green Reserve, so that he could get some experience undertaking local conservation projects. He found that he really enjoyed that type of work and we helped him to get his chemical handling certificate and his first aid certificate to open up some longer term options.

When his time with Green Reserve finished we identified a possible opportunity as a weed spraying operator and organised for a contractor to meet with Peter to talk about the possibility of work.  We had just purchased Peter some interview clothes that week - now he had an interview to go to!

They met the next day. Peter was upfront about how long he had been out of work and that he had a back and a drinking problem. Despite this the employer was willing to give him a go, provided a Doctor said he was fit to perform the duties required.  We arranged for Peter to have a medical and he received the all clear. We organised a mobile phone so that the employer could call Peter when the work started, set him up with boots, work clothes, esky, thermos and a canteen.  He was ready to go!

Peter has since started with the employer and is now off Centrelink benefits.

Peter’s employer is very happy with his work. Despite some initial concerns about the length of time Peter had been unemployed, they advise that Peter is working out really well for them. They hope to keep him on.

Tony’s story..

Tony is a local Indigenous man who has been a long term Campbell Page client, and had been unemployed for more than fifteen years. Campbell Page Job Network referred Tony to Labour Hire after getting him ready for work by helping him get OHS and traffic control tickets, assisting him with transport, and providing him with work clothes.

Labour Hire established that Tony was very highly motivated to work, and was looking for someone to give him a chance. Labour Hire approached a local employer for a day’s work for Tony as a traffic controller. Tony impressed the employer, and was so reliable and keen to work that the initial day’s work extended to more than six months.
