Writing an Application Letter

Note: If you do not know the name of the Manager, write Dear Sir/Madam

Dear Mrs Morlee

Please find attached my application for the position of Cooking Assistant (Job No C3678) as advertised in The Sandson News on 8 October 2003.

I have completed my Cooker Trainee Certificate 1 and am currently working part time for the Waterfall Restaurant. I am keen to find a full time position and am prepared to undergo further training if necessary.

Please find enclosed my Resumé and Selection Criteria in support of my application.

I am confident my skills and previous work experience will enable me to perform the duties of the position well. I am available for an interview at a time convenient to you and can be contacted by telephone on 029245 3612 or on my Mobile 0408 257 894

Application Tips

  1. Read the application thoroughly, carefully and then follow the instructions.
  2. Answer all the questions. Write N/A (not applicable) for questions that do not apply to you.
  3. Never respond NO to selection criteria questions. Look at ways of responding in the positive.
  4. Leave an appropriate telephone number. If you have no telephone, arrange to leave a number where employment messages can be taken.
  5. Double check street addresses, telephone numbers, dates and any other numbers to make sure they are correct.
  6. Double check spelling and punctuation as any errors could demonstrate a lack of attention to detail or poor spelling.
  7. Your application should be typed. If this is not possible, ensure your handwriting is neat and easy to read. )
  8. Know the names and dates of previous employers.
  9. Make sure your resume accountsHave a response for any breakbreaks in employment. For example (overseas holidays, periods of home duties.holiday etc)
  10. Know the specific name of each position you held.
  11. Know the names, dates and locations of each school you attended.
  12. Give the name, address and telephone numbers of three referees.
  13. Ensure your referees are happy to give a reference for you
  14. Check with referees that they are Ok to be used and will sell you ion a positive light.
  15. Have someone proofread your application.
  16. Do not give negative information, rather list positive or neutral information.
